This individual was an employee of the dealership. The following information is known about the fatality. There were two employees performing a test drive riding on a side-by-side. Police say the 31-year-old driver was thrown from the vehicle when it went into a ditch. The brief description of the incident in local news reports is all too familiar to those in the Powersports community. A simple google search of “UTV accident” results in the following headlines: Dec. 17, 2019 “Maryville (Illinois) Teen killed in UTV Acci- dent” — Authorities said she was not wearing a helmet or seatbelt at the time of the crash. Dec. 14, 2019 “14-year-old girl dies in UTV accident in Phelps County” — A 14-year-old girl from Fulton, Missouri, died after she was pinned beneath a UTV Saturday morning. Dec. 8, 2019 “Authorities identify man killed in UTV accident” — Authorities said the driver was not wearing a helmet and the UTV did not have any seat belts. Dec. 8, 2019 “Fatal UTV crash still under investigation” — Once the UTV overturned, the driver was partially ejected from the vehicle. The driver then became trapped under- neath the UTV after the crash, suffering fatal injuries. As you read through these brief descriptions of each inci- dent the common theme is the decedents were not wear- ing a seatbelt or helmet. UTV’s are incredibly powerful vehicles that have the ability to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3 seconds while weighing up to 2,000 pounds. It is absolutely imperative that your business not only have a seatbelt and helmet policy in place, but strongly enforce it.
